Throughout summer, MTV Australia kind of semi-rebrands itself as MTV Summer by running new summer-themed idents, while airing new seasons of their main shows, kicked off with a big MTV Summer Event.
The idea we came up with for the idents was to have this big "summer monster", made up of all these summery items, walking around town, grabbing more bits and pieces and adding it to himself as he goes. (I drew up the character design sketches and early storyboards for my boss Hilary, which we then passed on to The Lab to create in 3D and do
all the post production work).
Initially
we were going to get The Lab to also create the summer event packaging, however given that the first piece of show-related graphics needed to be on air within a week, it was decided that I would do the show packaging.
The task was a bit tricky because I had to create something that would, to a degree, match the summer monster idents that The Lab had not yet started working on.
I started out by just going mental and modelling as much summery items as I could over the weekend in Maya (since I'm way faster in Maya, than in Cinema 4D, which we use at work), and setting up a nice lighting setup. Some of these models were also passed on to The Lab to use.
The idea was that these summery items are floating together and gathering into this big ball (which would resemble the monster that The Lab was working on).
Render time also had to be kept unfathomably low (especially considering the poly count), because I didn't want to be wasting my time waiting for renders at work.
All the rendering was done in Cinema, and the compositing in After Effects. Most of the modelling was Maya.
